PUBIC PERFORMANCES AND ACTIVITIES ORGANISED AND PROMOTED BY GRASS STAGE
From January to November: Grass Stage organised seven ‘Culture Outpost’ public talks including speakers such as Seiji Shimoda (Japan), Xu Duo, Wang Dezhi, Song Yi, Probir Guha (India), Vasan Sitthiket (Thailand), Kai Tuchmann (Germany), Eugenio Barba (Denmark), Zhang Xian, Zhao Chuan, Gao Xiaoqin, Zang Ningbei and Zhang Bing./December: World Factory was invited to the 2nd Contemporary Theatre Week by Nanjing University of the Arts. Zhao Chuan hosted a workshop at the university, the result of which - Wild Grass Notes – was also presented at the 2nd Contemporary Theatre Week.
November: Performance project ‘World Factory – Theatre as Social Studies and Practice’, curated by Zhao Chuan as part of OCAT Performs 2014 programme, included performances of Grass Stage’s World Factory, talks and an international seminar named ‘The Exploration of Theatre as Social Studies and Practice - World Factory as an Example’. Grass Stage also supported the programme selection for Workers’ Chunwan (New Year Gala) 2015. Grass Stage performed World Factory in Shanghai Gumei Cultural Center at the end of November.
October: Zhao Chuan and Wu Meng in two weeks residency in University of Cambridge (UK) to support World Factory project in the UK side. Zhao Chuan visited Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin and gave talk on Grass Stage and World Factory.
September: Wu Meng and Yu Lingna in Tokyo and Busan to join the creation and performances of Asia-Meets-Asia programme Unbearable Dream 8: Somewhere.
August: Launch of 6th Chunmiao Class. Zhaochuan was invited to give talks about Grass Stage in Centre for Community Cultural Development, Hong Kong and Zürcher Hochschule der Künste (Summer School).
July: Grass Stage performed World Factory in Shanghai Rockbund Art Museum.
June: In the 3rd Lalian (Field Maneuver), Grass Stage members brought their new production World Factory and documentary/performance/discussion event series The Night of Little Society to Xi’an, Lanzhou, Xining, Yinchuan, Hohhot and Beijing. During the journey Grass Stage also held workshop and talk in Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts.
February to May: Grass Stage members worked on the creation of World Factory collectively, doing field trips to factories in various provinces, talking to workers and doing workshops with them.
From January to December: Eleven public lectures were held on Grass Stage Culture Outpost's including Ye Jingwen, Clare Dolan (USA), Wang Molin (Taiwan), Tamar Raban (Israel), Chen Binzhao (Hongkong), Feng Chengcheng (Hongkong), Quasar Thakore Padamse (India), Zhao Chuan, Mo Zhaoru (Hongkong), San Mu (Hongkong), Melkar Muallem (Palestine), Sakurai Daizo (Japan), Duan Huiming (Taiwan).
December: Grass Stage was invited to Contemporary Theatre Week in Nanjing Arts Institute, performed the Unsettling stones and The Night of Little Society. Zhao Chuan joined the seminar Theatre for the Youth.
November: Zhao Chuan and the World Factory program’s UK cooperators went to Nanjing Arts Institute to join the Sino-England Theatre Exchange Week. / November-December: Unsettling Stones was showed in Shanghai Rockbund Art Museum and AM Art Space. Zhao Chuan and Wu Meng went to Berlin Art University (UdK) to do the Unsettling Stones workshop and presentation, and held a lecture called Body as the Social Utterance.
October: Grass Stage put on the Palestinian script Kefiyyeh/Made in China in the form of stage reading in Shanghai Rockbund Art Museum.The Night of Little Society was canceled by authority at Jifeng Bookstore (Located at East China Normal University). Zhao Chuan, Wu Meng and Yu Kai went to Singapore for the workshop and performance of Unsettling Stones in Lasalle Collage of Arts Singapore.
September: Wu Meng and Yu Lingna went to Tokyo, Bangalore and Yogyakarta for Asia-meets-Asia program Unbearable Dream 7: Nowhere. Grass Stage put on the performance The Night of Little Society in Jifeng Bookstore (located at Shanghai Library).
August: Grass Stage was invited to join in the Haikou Youth International Experimental Art Festival, put on The Night of Little Society, including film, performance and talk. Wu Meng did outdoor performance work Talking with the Women in Haikou.
July: Zhao Chuan join in the Media, Arts and Performance: International Seminar on Media and Cross-border Education hosted by the West Coast Biennale 2013.
May: Tamar Raban (Israel)’s Performance Workshop in Shopping Center was held in K11 shopping center. Metamorphosis Garden created and directed by Wu Meng, Being Alive created by Yu Kai and Feng Zi were put on stage in Downstream Garage.
March: The 5th Chunmiao Class was held. Unsettling Stones, write and directed by Zhao Chuan, was showed in Downstream Garage. Yu Kai and Feng Zi went to Hualian (Taiwan) to join the East Coast Performance Art Festival, and run a theatre workshop. April: Zhao Chuan was invited to London by National Theatre Studio in UK to continue the preparation for the World Factory program, and went to Rome to run Unsettling Stones workshop and presentation in Forte Prenestino.
January: The Steatopygic Era,created by Grass Stage members,directed by Hou Qinghui, was put on stage in Downstream Garage.
From January to December: Nine public lectures, two workshops, and performance Party on Midsummer Night: Poem, folk music, sound & theatre among people were held on Grass Stage Culture Outpost's Social Theatre Forum. Lecturers including Liang Weijie (Hongkong), Zhang Nian, Agota Revesz (Hungary), Hiroshi Ohashi (Japan), Shi Ke, Gao Junyao (Taiwan), Christopher Connery (USA), Hou Qinghui, Wu Jueren, Liu Debao, etc.
November: Lane Theatre 1.0 produced by Christopher Connery was put on open air places by the members and friends of Grass Theatre. Feng Zi and Yu Kai Joined the 12th City Fringe Festival in Macao.
September- October: Join the Asia-Meets-Asia program, went to Tokyo, Taipei, Hongkong and Bangalore, put on the performance Mad Man’s Dairy and Unbearable Dream 6: Hope with cooperators. Then went to Mumbai and New Delhi to put on the new performance Unsettling Stones.
October: Grass Stage was invited to Shanghai Biennale to recover the Nail Theatre. Due to the malfeasance of the organizer, this project was given up halfway.
July-August: Hou Qinghui join in the Summer Project of Bread&Puppet Theatre in USA.Lane Theatre 0.5 produced by Christopher Connery was put on open air places by the members and friends of Grass Theatre. Zhao Chuan and Wu Meng join the Ensemble 209 for contemporary theatre exhibition in Israel. September: Wu Meng put on performance Two Streets Join into One in the streets of Leipzig, Germany, and joined the seminar Art, Performance & Public Square. Feng Zi went to Taiwan to join a forum of art critics.
May: Performance Litter Society( Volum1&2) was put on stage in Shanghai Jifeng Bookstore and Nanjing University. Zhao Chuan went to England to prepare for new performance, and held a lecture about Grass Stage in Cambridge University.
June: Hou Qinghui went to Brown University in USA to join the Seminar Theatre and civil society.
April: Hold Asia-meets-Asia: Shanghai 2012 program, invite Japanese director Hiroshi Ohashi to produce performance Republic Note 12.5 and hold a lecture. Put other two solo performances on the stage: Takumi Harada’s Straw Man, Yu Kai’s It.
March: Yu Kai and Feng Zi went to Japan to join in DA`M Theatre’s performance Random Glimpses 2.
February: The 4th Chunmiao Class was held.
From January to June: Five public lectures were held on Grass Stage Culture Outpost's Social Theatre Forum, in which the speakers were 2wheels4change group, Zhao Chuan, Sun Licui, Alberto Toscano and Chen Guangxing.
December: Commissioned by the "Southern Weekend", Grass Stage created The Water of Life collectively and performed in Oriental Art Center. The Little Society (Volume I and II) was staged in Ke Contemporary Art Theater. Zhao Chuan was invited to introduce Grass Stage on the Forum on Cultural Development of Young Scholars held by Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences.
November: Invited as art critics to participate in the Macao's Urban Art Spike Festival, Feng Zi performed Clown 2 and hosted a lecture titled On Solo Performance and its Deformation in China ’s Mainland.
October: Zhao Chuan and Yu Kai participated in the Asia meets Asia program Unbearable Dreams 6: Hope and Yu Kai performed with theater practitioners from other Asian parts in Tokyo. Zhao Chuan participated in the 3rd German-Sino Theatre Forum in Chongqing.
August-September: The 2nd Lalian--Touring Project was taken place. During the one month tour, The Little Society (Volume I and II) was performed in Hangzhou, Beijing, Wuhan, Guiyang, Chongqing, Huaihua, and a lot of lectures were held.
July-August: Hou Qinghui was invited to Chungsol in Korea as artist stationed in village in the 3rd International Environmental Theater Project.
July: Co-held workshop Landscape Conception and Mode of Cooperation with BM Space (Facilitator: Shi Ke).
June: Puppet show An Apple Tree was performed for children in Minsheng Art Museum. Zhao Chuan and Wu Meng performed Daydream/Glass in Gangeviertel of Hamberg and introduced Grass Stage on the Rights to City International Forum.
April-May: Hou Qinghui was invited to Cheju Theater Festival in Korea as an actress in the Grandmother Legend and worked as the designer, maker and manipulator of the puppets in the puppet show To Cool the Earth in the Seoul Art Festival.
March: The 3rd Chunmiao Class was held. Puppet show An Apple Tree was performed for children in Cinderella Club. European German TV 3Sat broadcast a feature introducing Grass Stage and The Little Society (Volume II).
February: Zhao Chuan, Wu Meng and Yu Kai were invited to the Tagtas Project to participate in Luxun, the Madman Diary(original name Luxun 2008) collaborated with artists from Hong Kong, Taipei and Tokyo in Morishita Studio Tokyo. Zhao Chuan introduced Grass Stage on TPAM in Yokohama.
January: Feng Zi introduced Suzuki Method, the Most Basic Workshop in Wuhan with co-facilitator Liu Yang.Collaborated with Jianghu Troupe, responding to the calling of It’s serious to reading drama script in public space from Macao Theatre Culture Institute, Feng Zi and Lang Jianfei read Caryl Churchill’s Seven Jewish Children in Wuhan.
From January to December: Six lectures were held on Grass Stage Culture Outpost's Social Theatre Forum, speakers were Christopher Connery, Zhang Xian, Gu Zheng, Rachel Freeman, Wang Xiaoming and Zhang Xianming respectively.
April-November: Grass Stage created and operated the Nail Theater.
December: The Little Society (Volume II) was staged in Macao and Guangzhou, and participated 2010 Mecooon Fringe Festival in Shanghai. Yu Kai and Feng Zi facilitated Body and Its Development workshop.
November: Zhao Chuan、Liu Nian and Feng Zi were invited to Macao’s Urban Art Spike Festival. Grass Stage were exhibited in the Hamburg-Shanghai Public Space exhibition in Hamburg.
October: Zhao Chuan and Feng Zi participated in the Asia meets Asia program Unbearable Dreams 5: Return collabrated with theater practitioners from other Asian parts in Tokyo.
August-September: Hou Qinghui participated in the Korean community thearter program hosted by Korean Wooden Cock Movement Lab, directed by multi-national theater artists which was carried out as Puppet show and street parade play.
July: Wu Meng was invited to participate in the Our Donghu Art Program in Wuhan and created social theater works Free XX with Our Home Youth Autonomy Lab and Jianghu Troupe.Zhao Chuan participated in the Theater der Welt in Germany .
June: The Little Society (Volume II) developed by Grass Stage collectively was auditioned in Mecooon.
From January to December: Eight lectures were held on Grass Stage Culture Outpost.
November: Zhao Chuan participated in the Asia meets Asia program Unbearable Dreams 4: Lost Home, collaborated with theater practitioners from other Asian parts.
October: The Little Society (Volume I) developed by Grass Stage participated in the 2009 Mecooon Fringe Festival in Shanghai.
July: Involved in planning of the "East Asia People's Theatre Network" Trainer's Training Program 2. Two members of Grass Stage went to Korea to participate in a one-month training and performances.
June: 2009 Grass Stage Lalian--Touring Project brought new play The Little Society Volume One to Hangzhou, Guangzhou, Nanjing, Wuhan, Jinan, Beijing within one month. Workshops and seminars were also held.
March: Invited to Japan for “Asia Performing Arts Presenters’ Network Conference”.
January: Performances from the Individual-theatre projects were performed at 2009 Hong Kong City Festival.
From January to December: 18 lectures had organized through the community culture project Culture Outpost.
November: Lu Xun 2008 was performed in Hong Kong, Taipei and Tokyo.
October - November: UNDER LUXUN BANNER – Performing and Symposium project was hold at DDM Warehouse, including Lu Xun 2008, a theatre production co-director, co-performing and co-produced by Clash Theatre (Hong Kong), Body Phase Studio (Taipei), DA-M Theatre (Tokyo) and Grass Stage; East Asia Body Presentation, performing series by artists from 8 cities; and a symposium, Forum: Theatre and Social Space etc.
May - November: Individual-theatre in Community project 1 and 2 were initiated, and performed in various locations included residential communities, charities occasions and villages.
December: Initiated fortnightly community culture activity Culture Outpost.
November: Madmen Story 2007 was performed at Downstream Garage in Shanghai
September: Supported Haibizi’s Tent Theatre’s performance in Beijing. Zhao Chuan and Hou Qinghui facilitated workshop at Songzhuang, Beijing.
July: Madmen Story 2007 was performed at Guling Street Avant-garde Theatre in Taipei, Hong Kong Fringe Club in 2007IDEA, Waterside Bar Theatre in Guangzhou and Outlook in Shenzhen.Participated at “Mainland and Taiwan Small Theatre Forum” in Taipei.
September: Madmen Story was performed at Shanghai Downstream Garage. Madmen Story was performed at the Shanghai Institute of Visual Arts. Also a workshop was organised.
August: Designated and Participated in the "One man's Korean Drama" by Korea People's Theatre Association at Shanghai Duoland Museum of Modern Art. Madmen Story was premiered at Guohua Theatre at the "Youth Forum" of 2006 Collage Theatre Festival of China.
July: Participated in the East Asia People's Theatre Network (EAPTN) "Trainer's Training Program", two member of Grass Stage went to Korea for one month's training and performance
February: Introduced and assisted Taiwan Assessment Theater Company to perform the <Midnight Angel> and run people's theatre workshop in Shanghai.
January: Introduced and assisted the Shanghai version of Black Hole, Ending with Hong Kong and Taiwan theatre groups.
November: The Hot Social Cases was performed in the official opening of "Downstream Garage"
October: 38th Parallel in Taipei, an extension version of 38th Parallel still Play was performed at the 2005 “Tri-city, Co-body" Theatre Festival at Guling Theatre in Taipei.
June: 38th Parallel still Play was performed at Shanghai Downstream Garage.
May: 38th Parallel still Play was performed at the opening of the 2005 Asian Madang People's Theatre Festival in Gwangju, Korea.
